Everything you need to know — how alcohol-free drinks are made, choosing the right bottle, ordering, delivery and more.

About Alcohol-Free Drinks

Alcohol-free wine begins life as real wine, made from properly fermented grapes. The alcohol is then removed using specialist techniques such as spinning cone technology, vacuum distillation or reverse osmosis, which strip out the alcohol while preserving the flavour, aroma and character of the original wine. The result is a drink that closely mirrors the wine it was made from, without any of the alcohol.

There are three main methods used by quality producers. Spinning cone technology applies centrifugal force and low-temperature steam to gently separate alcohol from the wine, preserving the delicate volatile aromatics that heat would otherwise destroy. Vacuum distillation reduces the boiling point of alcohol so it evaporates at much lower temperatures, protecting the flavour. Reverse osmosis passes the wine through an ultra-fine membrane that separates alcohol and water from the flavour compounds, which are then recombined without the alcohol fraction. The method chosen has a significant impact on the quality and taste of the finished product.

No, they are very different. Grape juice is simply pressed, unfermented grape juice that has never undergone fermentation. Alcohol-free wine starts as fully fermented wine, which develops the complexity, tannins, acidity and flavour depth associated with wine. The alcohol is then removed after fermentation, leaving behind a product that retains far more of the character and structure of wine than grape juice ever could.

The best examples do, and they continue to improve as the technology advances. We only stock products we have personally tasted and believe in. Some are genuinely indistinguishable from their alcoholic counterparts. Others have a slightly lighter body, which is a natural consequence of removing the alcohol, but the flavour, aroma and structure remain very much intact.

Most of our products are certified 0.0% ABV, meaning no detectable alcohol whatsoever. Some are labelled under 0.5% ABV, which is the UK legal standard for a product to be classified as alcohol-free. To put 0.5% in context, this is comparable to the trace amounts of alcohol found naturally in ripe fruit, bread and certain fruit juices. Every product listing on our website states the exact ABV clearly.

A 0.0% ABV product contains no detectable alcohol at all, measured to the limit of current testing technology. Under 0.5% ABV means the product contains trace amounts below the 0.5% threshold, which is the legally recognised definition of an alcohol-free drink in the United Kingdom. Both are considered alcohol-free under UK law. For those who need certainty for religious, medical or personal reasons, 0.0% ABV products provide complete assurance.

Switching to alcohol-free wine means significantly fewer calories, typically 30 to 50 per cent fewer than a standard glass of wine. There are no next-day effects on sleep quality, energy levels or cognitive function. Many of the natural polyphenols and antioxidants found in grape skins are preserved during the dealcoholisation process. Alcohol-free wine also carries none of the longer-term health risks associated with regular alcohol consumption, making it a genuine alternative for those looking after their wellbeing without giving up the pleasure of wine.

While the very low alcohol content in sub-0.5% products is generally considered negligible, most healthcare professionals advise that the safest approach during pregnancy is to avoid alcohol entirely, including products labelled alcohol-free. If you are pregnant and want to enjoy an alcohol-free drink, we recommend choosing a product certified 0.0% ABV and discussing it with your midwife or GP first. We always specify the ABV of every product clearly.

This is a personal decision we would always recommend discussing with a healthcare professional, counsellor or sponsor. Many people in recovery choose to enjoy alcohol-free wine without difficulty. We do not make medical recommendations, but we are happy to provide full product information including exact ABV, ingredients and production methods to help individuals and their healthcare teams make an informed choice.

Some medications interact with alcohol even in very small quantities. If you are on medication and want to know whether an alcohol-free drink is suitable, check with your GP or pharmacist first. Most 0.0% ABV products are considered safe alongside medication, but we always advise consulting a professional for any health-related decisions.

Several of the products we stock are certified Halal. Most notably, the entire OPIA range from Maison Pierre Chavin is produced without fermentation at any stage, using a botanical infusion method that guarantees zero alcohol from the very beginning of the process. These products carry formal Halal certification. We flag Halal-certified products clearly on each product page.

Many of our products are vegan, and we indicate this clearly on each product listing. Traditional winemaking sometimes uses animal-derived fining agents. The producers we work with increasingly use vegan-friendly alternatives or no fining agents at all. Look for the Vegan label on our product pages, or get in touch and we will advise.

Some do and some do not, depending on the producer. Sulphites are used as a preservative and stabiliser. Because alcohol-free wines generally have a shorter shelf life, some producers add sulphites to extend stability. Others, particularly those making organic products, use little or none. We indicate sulphite information on each product page.

Alcohol-free wine typically contains significantly fewer calories than regular wine. A 125ml glass usually contains between 25 and 50 calories, compared to around 85 to 120 calories in an equivalent glass of regular wine. The exact calorie content varies by product. Calorie information is included on our product pages where supplied by the producer.

Yes, and it works well in most recipes. Alcohol-free wine contributes the same depth, acidity and flavour to sauces, risottos, braises and marinades as regular wine. It is particularly useful when cooking for guests who do not drink, for families with children, or simply when you do not want to open a full bottle for a tablespoon in a recipe.

Alcohol-free wine has a shorter shelf life once opened than regular wine, because alcohol acts as a natural preservative. Most still varieties are best consumed within two to three days of opening if refrigerated and sealed. Sparkling varieties are best enjoyed on the day of opening to retain their bubbles. Unopened bottles should be stored in a cool, dark place before the best before date on the label.

Choosing the Right Drink

Start with the style you already enjoy. For red wine drinkers, the Cin&Cin FREE Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the finest alcohol-free reds we carry. For white wine drinkers, the Cero Chardonnay or Cin&Cin FREE Sauvignon Blanc are excellent entry points. For something celebratory, the Bosio Zero Sparkling range is reliably impressive. If you prefer a spirit alternative, the James Langley GINZERO is outstanding. Start with one bottle in the style you know and build from there.

The Cin&Cin FREE Cabernet Sauvignon is consistently the product that surprises people most. It has genuine tannin structure, dark cherry and blackcurrant fruit, and a dry, structured finish that holds up well against a proper red. The Bellerive Bio-Organic Cabernet and the Light House Cabernet Sauvignon are also excellent choices for those who want a serious, dry red wine character without alcohol.

For a dinner party we recommend a mix of styles. A premium sparkling option such as the Cin&Cin FREE Sparkling Bianco or Giol Alcohol Free Sparkling makes an elegant arrival drink. For the table, the Cin&Cin FREE Cabernet Sauvignon works beautifully with red meat and cheese, while the Bellerive Chardonnay or Cin&Cin FREE Sauvignon Blanc suits fish and lighter dishes. If you would like a tailored recommendation based on your menu, get in touch and we will help.

For a celebration, the Giol Alcohol Free Sparkling is our top recommendation. It comes from Italy's oldest documented winery and is made from 100% Glera, the same grape as Prosecco. The Cin&Cin FREE Sparkling Bianco and the Bosio Zero range are also excellent choices. The Fiore Dark Rose makes a particularly striking visual impression that guests always notice.

Red wine styles such as Cin&Cin FREE Cabernet Sauvignon and Cero Zinfandel pair well with red meat, lamb, mature cheese and rich pasta sauces. White wine styles including Cero Chardonnay and Cin&Cin FREE Sauvignon Blanc pair well with fish, white meat, salads and lighter dishes. Sparkling options work with almost everything and are particularly good with seafood and soft cheeses. The CIN&CIN Aperitivo and OPIA Virgin Sparkling Spritz both make excellent aperitivo-hour drinks.

Serve still red alcohol-free wines slightly chilled, between 14 and 16 degrees Celsius, as they are lighter-bodied than regular reds. Serve white and rose varieties well chilled, between 8 and 10 degrees Celsius. Sparkling varieties should be served very cold, around 6 to 8 degrees. If in doubt, treat them as you would their alcoholic equivalents.

A spirit alternative is a non-alcoholic product designed to replicate the character of a specific spirit, such as gin or aperitivo. Products like James Langley GINZERO and CIN&CIN Aperitivo fall into this category. A mocktail is a ready-to-drink non-alcoholic mixed drink, such as Spirit Garden Mojito Zero, which comes pre-mixed and ready to serve.

Consider what the recipient already enjoys. For an established wine drinker exploring alcohol-free, a premium bottle such as the Giol Alcohol Free Sparkling or Cin&Cin FREE Cabernet Sauvignon makes a strong impression. For someone who keeps Halal, the OPIA range makes a thoughtful and considered choice. A sparkling option is almost always well received if you are unsure. About No&Low Drinks

No&Low Drinks is a UK-based family business founded by a mother and son team in Ashton-under-Lyne, Greater Manchester. We started because we were tired of alcohol-free drinks being treated as an afterthought. We believe everyone deserves a genuinely good drink, whether or not they choose to drink alcohol, and we set out to find the best products available and make them accessible in the UK.

Every single product in our range has been personally tasted and approved by us before we stock it. We do not list anything we would not happily serve at our own table. We look for products that genuinely compete with their alcoholic equivalents on quality, flavour and experience. We work with established producers across France, Germany, Italy, Spain and further afield.

We are small, which means we are selective. We stock fewer products than some retailers, but every one has been chosen deliberately. We know every product we sell, we know the producers, and we can give honest, informed advice. We are also a family business, which means every order and every customer matters to us personally.

Yes. Sustainability matters to us. We use eco-friendly packaging materials and work with producers who share a commitment to responsible production. Many of the wines we stock are organic or biodynamic, and we are continually reviewing our own operations to reduce our environmental footprint.
