Frequently Asked Questions About Alcohol-Free White Wine
Common questions about alcohol-free white wine: how it is made, how it tastes, and how to get the most from it.
What does alcohol-free white wine taste like?
Alcohol-free white wines retain the crisp acidity, fruit aromatics and mineral character of their alcoholic counterparts. Depending on the grape, you get citrus, green apple, peach or tropical notes. The main difference is the absence of the warmth that ethanol provides and a slightly lighter body. High-quality de-alcoholisation preserves the delicate aromatics that make white wine distinctive. It tastes like wine, not like fruit cordial.
Does alcohol-free white wine retain its acidity?
Yes. Acidity is a key structural element of white wine and it survives the de-alcoholisation process intact. A good alcohol-free Sauvignon Blanc or Riesling still has the bright, refreshing finish you expect. Acidity also acts as a natural preservative, helping the wine stay fresh after opening for longer than a comparable red.
What is de-alcoholisation and how is the alcohol removed?
De-alcoholisation is the process of removing ethanol from fully fermented wine. The most common method used by premium producers is vacuum distillation, where the wine is gently heated under low pressure, which lowers the boiling point of ethanol so it evaporates without damaging the aromas or polyphenols. Some producers also use spinning cone technology or reverse osmosis, each with slightly different effects on flavour. The result is a wine that has gone through full fermentation but has had the alcohol extracted afterwards.
Is alcohol-free white wine good for you?
Alcohol-free white wine retains the natural polyphenols and antioxidants found in white grapes, without the health risks associated with alcohol. At typically 15 to 25 kcal per 100ml, it is significantly lower in calories than standard white wine (around 70 to 75 kcal per 100ml). It is not a health product, but it is a more mindful option for those reducing their alcohol intake.
Can I use alcohol-free white wine in cooking?
Yes, it works well in cream sauces, risottos, fish dishes and marinades. The acidity and fruit character behave similarly to alcoholic white wine when cooked. For a classic beurre blanc, seafood pasta or chicken in white wine sauce, an alcohol-free white wine performs comparably. The reduced alcohol content means slightly less evaporation, so adjust quantities if needed.
What temperature should I serve alcohol-free white wine?
Alcohol-free white wine is best served well chilled, between 8 and 11 degrees Celsius, similar to standard white wine. Without the warmth of alcohol, it can taste flat if served too warm, so err on the cooler side. Remove from the fridge around 5 minutes before serving rather than the 15 to 20 minutes you might allow for an alcoholic white.
How long does alcohol-free white wine last after opening?
Once opened, reseal and refrigerate. Consume within 3 to 5 days for the best flavour. Without ethanol acting as a preservative, alcohol-free white wine oxidises more quickly than its alcoholic equivalent. A vacuum wine stopper or inert gas preserver significantly extends the life of an opened bottle.
Is this suitable if I am pregnant or driving?
This wine is certified 0.0% ABV, meaning it contains no measurable alcohol and is suitable for drivers. If you are pregnant, we recommend consulting your midwife or doctor before consuming any dealcoholised product, as guidance varies individually.
Do your products contain sulphites?
It depends on the product. Some of our wines do contain sulphur dioxide (sulphites) as a preservative, declared as an allergen on the label and well within EU and UK legal limits. However, a number of the products we stock are sulphite-free. Always check the individual product label or description to confirm.
How is alcohol-free white wine different from white grape juice?
Alcohol-free white wine is produced by fermenting grapes in the traditional way, developing acidity, secondary aromas and structural complexity, then removing the alcohol afterwards. White grape juice is simply pressed fruit that has never fermented. The fermentation process creates completely different flavour compounds. A glass of alcohol-free white wine has the crisp complexity of wine; grape juice does not.
